Zante Holiday - Mountain Villages
All the villages in Zante are a huge attraction for tourists due to their old fashioned buildings, monuments, narrow roads, unique lifestyles and the food. Most of the villages on the island are mountain villages. They have loads of beaches and rocky patches that can seem as heaven for anyone living in the cities. The roads leading to these villages are extremely small and bordered by loads of trees and bushes. Unfortunately, many of the old civilizations of these villages were destroyed by a huge earthquake that took place in 1953. Thus, one can see only few architectural examples of the ancient Zante which was considered to have the most beautiful architecture of Greece, are found in all these villages. Few villages of the Zante island city are given below.

1. Maherado : It is the largest village on the island of number two and has a huge population of 10,000 people the main spot of attraction in this village is the church called as the Agia Mavra church. The church is a bold example of the Venetian art of building. The church has paintings and carvings done on the walls and the ceiling which depict the history of the Greek. The village is extremely traditional and thus you may be able to have some experience about the old Greek architectures and lifestyles. The roads of the village are quite distinctive and similarly are the various monuments in the village.
2. Keri : It is a village full of stone houses and narrow streets. The village is extremely traditional and the people here are extremely simple and have simple lifestyles. The population of this small village is about 700 but it is preferred for a visit by the tourist’s because of its stone architecture and small streets. The central square of this small village is one of its kinds and offers a view of the sea that spreads around the island. The village holds a church called as the Panagia Keriotissa. The church depicts the ancient Greek culture and bears paintings and carvings of the same. The village also holds a beach and thus becomes a favorite for the tourists.

3. Maries : This traditional village is a small village with a population of about 700 people. It is a mountain village and is situated on top of the verdant hill. This village too, like many other villages on the island is famous for the narrow streets and the stone houses. The village has a lovely central square giving a view of the Ionian Sea. The church in this village is called as the panagia mariesotissa. It shows us many ancient Greek depictions in the form of paintings and carvings.
